Types of Illinois fish

Largemouth Bass

Largemouth Bass have a very large mouth and a large upper jaw that extends behind the eye. It's color ranges from green to black. An average largemouth bass would weigh between 6 to 8 pounds. The world record largemouth weighed 22 pounds, 4 ounces but most state records are between 10 and 14 pounds. Top water lures as well as spinners, worms, and many other baits work well with bass.

Small mouth Bass

Small mouth Bass have a smaller mouth and its jaw does not extend beyond the eye. The eye of the small mouth bass contains red. It's body is bronze or brown in color and its side markings look like vertical bars. The world record small mouth bass weighed 11 pounds, 15 ounces, but most state records are between 7 and 9 pounds. Top water lures as well as spinners, worms, and many other baits work well with bass.

Walleye

Walleye have separate top fins, streamline shape and large milky eye set the walleyes apart from all other Illinois fish. Walleye may be found in large river systems as well as in most large Illinois lakes. Walleye are most often found in deep water, but may be caught in the spring, as they move to shallow areas to spawn. Minnows, leeches, as well as spinners and crank baits work well on walleye.
